Carlsberg Creates the World’s Smallest Non-Alcoholic Beer

In a groundbreaking fusion of art, science, and innovation, Carlsberg has officially unveiled the world’s smallest non-alcoholic beer—a minuscule bottle that stands just 12 millimeters tall and holds a mere 0.005 centiliters of alcohol-free brew.

This tiny masterpiece is more than just a novelty; it’s a bold statement about the importance of moderate and responsible drinking.

A Symbol of Moderation from a Brewing Giant

For over 150 years, Carlsberg has pioneered innovations in the brewing industry, from developing pure yeast cultures to discovering the pH scale. Their latest creation, though small in size, carries a big message: moderation matters.

“To promote responsible drinking, we present our most moderate idea ever,”

said Casper Danielsson, Head of Communications at Carlsberg Sweden.

“The world’s smallest beer holds only one-twentieth of a milliliter and is so small that it’s easy to miss. But the message is much bigger.”

Behind the World’s Smallest Non-Alcoholic Beer

Creating the world’s smallest non-alcoholic beer was no small feat. The initiative was a collaboration between Carlsberg and several Swedish experts:

  • RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) engineered the process of filling the micro-bottle using capillary technology typically reserved for fiber optics.

  • Glaskomponent, a specialist in laboratory glassware, designed the rice-grain-sized glass bottle.

  • Miniature artist Åsa Strand meticulously crafted and applied the label, cap, and coloration.

  • The non-alcoholic beer itself was specially brewed at Carlsberg’s experimental brewery in Falkenberg, Sweden, designed to deliver maximum flavor in the tiniest volume possible.

Strand reflected on the creative challenge: “Crafting and applying the colour, cap and label for a bottle just twelve millimeters tall has been incredibly challenging and great fun. There was no established way of doing this, but with precision, patience and creativity we managed to make it work.”

Sparking Innovation: A Student Challenge to Go Even Smaller

In the spirit of innovation, Carlsberg is now challenging students across Sweden to take the concept even further. In partnership with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology Student Union, they’ve launched a competition: create an even smaller non-alcoholic beer. The prize? 10,000 SEK ($1,061.49 USD) and a visit to the prestigious Carlsberg Research Laboratory in Copenhagen.

Lydia Boij, President of the Student Union, captured the challenge’s spirit perfectly:

“We usually focus on the big questions. But we can also grow even more from the smaller and trickier challenges. I’m excited to see how KTH students take on this one.”

More Than a Gimmick: Why This Tiny Beer Matters

This isn’t just a clever PR stunt—it’s a meaningful statement about the role of non-alcoholic beer in modern society.

As global trends shift toward sober curiosity, reduced alcohol consumption, and mindful drinking, Carlsberg’s microbrew serves as a creative and symbolic call to action.

By producing the world’s smallest non-alcoholic beer, Carlsberg not only pushes the boundaries of what’s physically possible but also reaffirms its leadership in the NA beer space—one drop at a time.
