In a strategic move to expand its brewing capacity in North America, Asahi, the renowned Japanese brewing conglomerate, has recently acquired Octopi Brewing, based in Waunakee, Wisconsin.
This significant development follows a period of active search for brewing opportunities in North America by Japanese brewers, as reported by Reuters in late 2022.
About Octopi Brewing
Octopi Brewing, a name that has been resonating within the brewing industry, especially during the pandemic, has demonstrated remarkable growth.
According to the Brewers Association’s (BA) New Brewer magazine (May/June 2023 issue), Octopi experienced an astounding 443% increase in volume in 2020. This exponential growth continued in the subsequent years, with increases of 51% and 38% in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
As of 2022, the latest year for which BA data is available, Octopi boasted a production of 220,000 barrels of beer.
Octopi’s Role as a Major Non-Alcoholic Beer Producer
Octopi Brewing has established itself as a significant player in the non-alcoholic beer segment, predominantly under its brand “Untitled Art“.
Additionally, it has been engaged in contract brewing for a variety of non-alcoholic beers from brands like Southern Grist, Busty Lush, Best Day Brewing, Fremont Brewing, and Lakefront Brewery.
What Does This Acquisition Mean for these NA Beer Brands?
The acquisition raises questions about the future of these non-alcoholic beers and brands. It could potentially lead to increased resources for production and, hopefully, more competitive pricing.
However, there is also a possibility that contract brewing might take a backseat under Asahi’s management, potentially focusing on their own line of NA beer, which could require these brands to seek alternative brewing arrangements.
Regardless of the outcome, this acquisition marks a significant milestone in the global brewing industry, particularly in the non-alcoholic beer segment.
As the situation evolves, we will continue to monitor and provide updates on how this acquisition impacts the involved parties and the broader market.
Stay tuned for further developments in this intriguing chapter of the brewing industry’s expansion and adaptation in the dynamic North American market.
